Hyrid electric powertrains have advanced in recent years to reach parity with many standard gasoline-powered vehicles. Ford’s 2018 Fusion Energi showcases these advances with a powerful and efficient lithium-ion battery and Atkinson-cycle engine.

The Fusion Energi is powered by a 2L I-4 engine that’s assisted by an electric motor cranking out 88 kilowatts of power. That electric motor is powered by a 7.6kWh lithium-ion battery that charges in about seven hours using a 120V cable. With that much electric power assisting the gasoline engine, the Fusion Energi achieves a combined 97 mpg fuel economy rating from the EPA.
